A shocking lawsuit has revealed the harrowing experience of an 18-month-old girl, 'Amalia', who was detained by US immigration authorities and faced life-threatening circumstances. Amalia, along with her parents, was detained during a routine check-in, and the family's ordeal began. After being hospitalised with a severe respiratory illness, Amalia was returned to custody and denied the very medication that could have saved her life.

She was diagnosed with COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Despite this, the detention centre staff took away her nebuliser and respiratory medication upon her return.
Amalia's weight dropped significantly, and even the nutritional drinks provided to help her regain strength were confiscated.
Elora Mukherjee, the family's attorney, said, "Baby Amalia should never have been detained. She nearly died at Dilley." Mukherjee further highlighted the dire conditions at the Dilley facility, stating that hundreds of children and families lack basic necessities like water, nutritious food, education, and proper medical care.
The Department of Homeland Security has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
