In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to a commanding 111-89 victory over the struggling Boston Celtics, effectively ending Boston's five-game winning streak. Brunson tallied an impressive 31 points while his teammate Josh Hart contributed significantly with 19 points of his own during the match held on Sunday.
The Knicks demonstrated their strength as Karl-Anthony Towns also made a notable contribution with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Remarkably, New York managed to maintain their lead throughout the final 42 minutes of the game, showcasing their dominance. Mikal Bridges and the recently acquired Jose Alvarado rounded out the scoring for the Knicks, each adding 14 and 12 points respectively, despite the team shooting only 40% from beyond the arc by hitting 14 of 45 attempts.
On the other hand, the Celtics struggled offensively, with Jaylen Brown scoring 26 points and Derrick White contributing 19. Boston’s recent success came to a halt as they shot just 37% overall, including a dismal 17.1% from 3-point range, making only 7 of their 41 attempts. Baylor Scheierman stepped into the starting lineup for the injured Sam Hauser, finishing with respectable numbers of 10 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists.
This game featured two of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders, with Boston entering the contest holding a slender one-game lead over New York for second place. The two teams are set to clash again later in the season on April 9 in New York, a matchup that promises to be intense.
New York effectively expanded their lead to 85-68 by the end of the third quarter, capping off the period with a 20-7 run. Brunson took charge late in the game, scoring ten consecutive points that pushed the Knicks' advantage to a significant 23 points with just four minutes remaining.
Interestingly, Boston revived the controversial “Hack-a-Robinson” strategy that had been introduced during last spring’s playoff series against the Knicks. Mitchell Robinson, who has struggled at the free-throw line with a career average of 51% and a current season rate of 38%, surprised many by sinking both of his attempts with 2:32 left in the third quarter after previously missing all four of his free throws in the first half.
At halftime, the Knicks held a narrow lead of 60-53. Brunson’s performance was especially noteworthy, as he netted 19 points within the first two quarters, with 12 of those coming early in the game. Although Boston trailed by as much as 17 points, they fought valiantly to reduce the deficit to just a two-possession game at the start of the second half, even while shooting a meager 22.7% from three-point range with only 5 successful shots out of 22 attempts.
Looking ahead, the Knicks will host the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night, while the Celtics will face the Chicago Bulls at home on Wednesday night.
